TREATMENT OF MUSCLES: INTRODUCING INTEGRATED MEDICINE
I have researched back problems for over 20 years, making extensive comparisons of thousands of patient records. Because medical science and procedures for the spine are so inadequate and misleading I have found it necessary to go back to first principles. 2,500 years ago in Greece Hippocrates, the father of medicine, advocated what he called 'Regimen Therapy', which boosted the body's own healing power, based on diet, exercises and massage. He said people would not be ill if they ate well, did regular exercises and had periodic massage to alleviate stress and strain, while in sickness the same procedures led to more rapid recovery. I have made this my basic principle in my work in Integrated Health. Massage in particular creates a sense of well-being and invigorates the body by removing aches and improving blood circulation. After Hippocrates, the Romans perpetuated this, especially in their public baths, as did the great Persian physician Avicenna, a thousand years later. By working on muscles, passively by massage and actively through exercises, it is possible to release additional energy required when a person is being healed or treated. Ask any fatigued or stressed person how he or she feels after a session of good therapeutic massage and the answer will invariably be 'excellent'.
